Light Towers Trident and Welcome Signage Greet Travellers at the Fort McMurray International Airport

Fort McMurray, AB – On December 10, 2014, the Fort McMurray International Airport unveiled its new light towers trident and welcome signage, which comprise the latest addition to the airport’s public art program. These structures were designed, fabricated, and installed by Calgary-based F&D Scene Changes Ltd.

A trident of three light towers now greets passengers at the roundabout located on Saline Creek Parkway. The towers range in height: one stands 21 feet, 6 inches; another is 24 feet, 3 inches; and the last is 28 feet tall. Constructed of steel and acrylic panels, the towers feature internal red, green, blue, and white (RGBW) lighting along with automotive-grade finishes. Each tower displays an illuminated YMM logo.

The primary artist of the design, Cameron Farn, integrated elements of aircraft design along with lighting inspired by the vibrant Aurora Borealis. “Visitors can enjoy the dynamic composition of three spire-shaped capsules that showcase the dancing light within,” says Farn. “The stylized tower bases evoke thoughts of aircraft engines and shock cones of jet-powered aircraft. The three pillars stand straight and true: one for strength, one for spirit, and one for community. As a complete trident, they are a testament to the vibrancy, diversity, and commitment to community within Fort McMurray.”

Two welcome signs have been installed on the roundabout located on Snowbird Way. Constructed of concrete, steel, and aluminum, each sign is 30 feet in length and was carefully designed to coordinate with the light towers. “Waves of light cut through the steel plates behind the lettering to evoke images of the vast boreal forest of the Wood Buffalo region,” artist Farn explains. “The signs add a unique depth of meaning while also directing visitors and serving as a functional landmark.”

“Our new terminal is a world-class facility, and we’re pleased to welcome guests with a dramatic, artistic entryway,” says Scott Clements, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “F&D Scene Changes has done an excellent job of integrating the natural beauty of our region with aviation-themed design.”
