Fort McMurray, AB – October 3, 2017 – The Fort McMurray Airport Authority (FMAA) has released the results of a 2016 Economic Impact Study, which was conducted by InterVISTAS Consulting Group. The study was commissioned by the FMAA to determine the economic impact of the Fort McMurray International Airport’s (YMM) operations in 2016.

“Airports are not successful on their own, communities make airports successful and airports can drive economic growth. This study looks at the vital role YMM Airport plays at creating and providing skilled jobs that contribute to our local economy,” said RJ Steenstra, President & CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “We provide a vital transportation service to the region while our employees and businesses support our community’s economy and diversification.”

The study found that in 2016, the Fort McMurray International Airport supported 900 skilled, well-paying direct jobs, generated $46 million in direct wages and produced $354 million in total economic output. The study also found that the Fort McMurray International Airport contributed $25 million in total tax revenues, $4 million of which was paid directly to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to help support the local economy.

In addition to the 2016 Economic Impact Study, a microstudy was also conducted to take a close look at how individual air services impact the Fort McMurray International Airport as well as the region.

The information gathered in both the 2016 Economic Impact Study and the microstudy, demonstrates that the Fort McMurray International Airport is a source of stable, year-round employment and a key economic contributor to the local community.

Pet Therapy Pilot Program Launches at Fort McMurray International Airport

Fort McMurray, AB – April 10, 2015 On the evening of Thursday, April 9, 2015, travellers passing through Fort McMurray International Airport enjoyed the launch of a new pet therapy pilot program. Dog and handler teams from PAWs for People visited with passengers in the first floor arrivals hall. Visitors were invited to stroke and pet these gentle, friendly, specially-trained pet therapy dogs.

“How can you be sad while you’re petting a dog?” commented one of the passengers who enjoyed playing with Chilli, Asia, and Summer, the three dogs who participated in the program launch. “I’m so happy to have pet therapy at the airport. This makes my day.”

PAWS for People is an organization that brings pets and people together for comfort, interaction, stimulation, and joy in a safe and relaxing atmosphere. Established in 2002, they provide regular pet visitation services at a number of venues throughout Fort McMurray. All pets in the program have been screened and trained. The group receives funding from the United Way, and operates under the umbrella of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

“We’re excited to partner with the airport to offer this pilot program to travellers,” says Koralee Samaroden, program coordinator of PAWs for People. “We were delighted to see how much passengers enjoyed interacting with the dogs on our first evening. We encourage people to come and visit with us when they need a little stress relief while they’re travelling, or if they’re missing their pets back at home.”

Fort McMurray International Airport is the second airport in Alberta, and fourth in Canada, to offer pet therapy services to its passengers. Other Canadian airports with pet therapy programs include Edmonton International Airport, Regina International Airport, and Saskatoon International Airport.

Pet therapy teams will be at the airport on selected Thursday evenings in April, May, and June. The pilot program may be extended into a permanent feature at the airport, depending on passenger feedback and participation. Airport Authority Announces Organizational Change

Fort McMurray, AB – April 9, 2015 The Fort McMurray Airport Authority has announced an organizational change which will allow the airport to continue to run efficiently during the current challenging economic climate in our community.

The airport undertook a thorough review of all expenditures to assess whether savings could be found to reduce the substantially higher costs associated with operating its new main terminal building. One of the areas identified for cost reduction was to contract in-house custodial services to an external organization.

“In response to the recent industry downturn that has impacted all organizations who contribute to the energy sector, a decision was made to analyze our corporate expenses to ensure the airport’s long-term sustainability,” said Scott Clements, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “By contracting out custodial services, we are able to reduce costs and keep the airport operating as efficiently as possible. We have worked closely with CUPE Local 1505 to ensure that our current custodial staff members are treated equitably and in accordance with their union contract.”

On Thursday, April 9, 2015, the Fort McMurray Airport Authority provided notice to its 24 custodial staff members that custodial services will be contracted out effective June 1, 2015. The Airport Authority will highly recommend to the contractor that existing custodial staff be considered for hire by the contractor.

Statement on December 19 Incident at Fort McMurray Airport

Fort McMurray, AB – December 19, 2014 Travellers at the Fort McMurray International Airport experienced travel delays this afternoon as Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a threat at the airport at approximately 12:30pm. As a precaution, the terminal building was evacuated.

In their news release, Wood Buffalo RCMP noted that “a lone male was arrested and is currently in custody for making comments in reference to a dangerous device. Threats made against the safety of an aircraft and/or its occupants are criminal code offences.” The RCMP reported that “it was determined that the public was in no danger during this incident.” An investigation is ongoing.

Passengers were allowed back in the terminal shortly before 2:00pm. Approximately 300 passengers on four flights were immediately impacted by this event, but cascading travel delays may occur. Passengers are advised to consult their airlines regarding any potential flight delays.

“We are very grateful to the RCMP for their prompt, professional response to the situation,” says Joanne Barnes, Communications Coordinator for the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. “CATSA staff worked hard to ensure that passengers were rescreened as efficiently as possible once returning to the terminal, and airline staff made themselves available to answer passenger inquiries. We appreciate the cooperation of all our our partners in a situation such as this.”
